Pool Pictures from June

I decided to just put up all of the pictures of us playing at the pool each month in one post. We go at least 4 times a week so that can get to be tons of posts if I put them separate.

The reunion we went to was the Allen family reunion...not the Sigman. I obviously know nothing. Sorry to anyone that was offended by that. Just kill me quickly and get it over with.
I am looking forward to going to Colorado next time!

Family

The Sigman reunion was this weekend. It was from Thursday until Saturday or Sunday... I do not know which. We went up to Park City on Thursday night at 7 pm after I had worked all day. We did a scavenger hunt which everyone really enjoyed. It was a really fun idea. Then we talked for a while and came home. I am not sure how the rest went because we never went back up. A few reasons for this. We were going to go on Friday but Lewis did not get home until late so by 7 pm they were 2 hours into the dinner. Then on Saturday they went to Lagoon. We did not.

Side Story
{Lagoon is just not reasonable for our family. It is expensive. Every time we go the kids want to leave after like 2 hours. The water in the pools are too cold so they do not want to go their either. OK! The last reason is the real reason... I HATE Lagoon! It is small and really dirty! There is rust on everything. (It could also be that the first time I went to Lagoon I was pregnant and I was afraid to touch anything for fear of germs.) I did not grow up in Utah so I did not grow up going to Lagoon. I grew up going to Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Disneyland, and Six Flags. Lagoon is like a carnival. Don't get me wrong, I love a fair or carnival. They are gross and dirty and expensive and they come maybe one time a year. I am willing to go to them once a year, just like I am willing to go to Lagoon once a year with Lewis' work for $8.00, but no more. The kids do have fun when we go, but they only have fun for like 2 hours. I just can't see paying upwards of $150 to get in plus money for food, and drinks for us to go just to leave a little while later.}

When we were at the reunion I realised something. I love Lewis' family. They are great...BUT. Yes there is a BUT. A big one, and I am not talking about mine. HAHA!!

We are all one family, but when we get together people are still in their little families. I guess I am just a little saddened by that. Most of Jan's kids live here with their families. Jeanine and Heather have all of their kids living either in their house or very close by. Even Quinn and his wife have his sister, her husband and their baby here. See, Lewis and I do not have a family here. Allison and Marty live in Virginia. Heidi and Ryan and their kids live in Oregon. Katie and her fiance live in Connecticut. So when we get together with the whole Sigman bunch it is just us. Everyone is very nice and they talk to us and include us but, it is sad that it is just us. I wish I could say when we are getting together that I know my sisters will be there but I can't. I am just saying that is why I feel torn about getting together with everyone. I know we will have fun, but it still seems like something is missing. And now with Kendall gone, I have lost one more friend. I miss you guys! We never see Heidi and her family or Katie. Last time we saw them was YEARS ago. Really! YEARS!!! And Allison and Marty we saw in May for the first time in almost 2 years! Really. Would you like to have to wait 2 years to see your family? No. And neither do we. Consider yourselves lucky to see your families, even if they drive you crazy. Everything is so expensive we can't even take out kids to see their grandparents. I saw my grandparents several times a year growing up, and Lewis did too. And we took that for granted. OK, I am done.

OK I got a little out of control there. I just type and type and do not stop and think. I won't delete it because I promised myself that I will not censor myself as much as possible because this blog is as much for me and my memories as it is for people to read. I am just trying to keep it honest.

Bees Baseball

On Tuesday last week Lewis' work had a little party at the Bees Stadium downtown. It was a dinner and the baseball game for the employees and their families. We all went and had cheeseburgers or hot dogs, chips, watermelon, sodas and cookies. It was actually very good food. After we ate the kids played in the Boondocks Bounce House and on the playground. Then they rode the train (minus Jason, he doesn't DO that) and we got ice cream. We had pretty good seats. By the time the game started the sun had gone behind the stadium and we were in the shade. We watched the game until the 4Th quarter, by then the kids were ready to go. It was sunny and over 90 degrees but we still had a great time. I would like to go with Lewis to a game by ourselves so maybe we can stay for the whole thing and relax a little. As usual, I took a ton of pics, so here are a few.

Sassy

sas·sy:

1. Rude and disrespectful; impudent.
2. Lively and spirited; jaunty.
3. Stylish; chic: a sassy little hat.

My sis-in-law calls me today to rant. I knew as soon as she asked if I had a minute to talk, she was going to rant about someone or something. I love it when she does that. I know I am going to get a bit of gossip or she will have some great story about something that has happened. So I put my book down and get ready to listen. She tells a story about what happened at church today. (I love these stories the best. It just provides me with a backup when people say that I am the only one that finds quite a bit of Utah Mormons... well, um... different.) Here is the story and my reaction. Enjoy.

Marlo: So Krystina (her 10 year old daughter) tells me after class that her best friend pulled her aside before primary to talk to her. Her friend told her that she is no longer allowed to play with Krystiana, because her mom thinks she is too sassy.

Me: WHAT?? Since when is being a little sassy a bad thing?

I will spare you the rest of the 30 minute conversation. Here are my thoughts and feelings.

1. Unless my child is in danger of being hurt or arrested I will not tell them who they can and can't play with. I will (and do) control them playing with certain friends at our house only, so I can know for sure what they are doing, but I will not forbid them to play with someone. When you forbid your child to do something that is just asking them to test you and do it.

2. Seriously? If sassy is the worst thing your child is then be grateful! If sassy is the worst thing your child's friend is then be grateful. I can think of thousands of worse things to be then sassy. Literally, thousands.

3. The mother of that child should be ASHAMED of herself. I feel sorry for her, and her daughter. If she is so concerned about Krystina, who is one of the most well behaved, grown up, wonderful 10 year old girls I know, then she is in for a long, hard road ahead. It is just sad what she is doing to her daughter.

*When I was 17 a woman in our ward forbid her 15 year old daughter from hanging out and seeing me. She said over and over that I was a bad influence on her girl. Guess what? Her daughter was the one drinking, smoking, doing drugs, skinny dipping and sleeping with all of the boys. I was the one going to seminary and um... not doing those other things. When she was with me she never did that stuff. She liked hanging out with me. She would be with me as much as possible, and NEVER got into trouble when she was. Once her mother forbid her to see and talk to me the girl went nuts. She told me she was gonna show her mom. She got caught on base with drugs, alcohol and naked boys. Needless to say she was shipped right out to her grandmother's house. The mother to this day blames me for her daughter's outrageous behavior. I say, look in the mirror lady. YOU and only you pushed her to that. (Well the girl could have done the right thing, but that is another post.)*

I think Marlo should find out what was really said. The mother told the daughter who told Krystina who told Marlo.... see what I am getting at?

Sassy. When I think sassy I think spirited, quick witted, chic. I have no negative connotations for sassy. I think Marlo is a little sassy, and gave it to her girls. I am a little sassy... well maybe not a little. I am sassy. I think I have given my daughters a little sassyness, and I like that they are that way. There is nothing wrong with sassy. Call me sassy any day!

But I eat Yellow Snow...

After Haley's graduation we went home and had dinner. After dinner EVERYONE wanted to go and get Shaved Ice (which is kinda like a snow cone). Make sure you look closely at the sign Adam is standing next to. Abigail asked what it said and I told her that it says Eat Yellow Snow! I had to explain to Abigail why we do not eat yellow snow, and that the sign is a joke. She then says, "But I eat yellow snow, and so does Dad!" Lewis was eating a banana shaved ice. She had watermelon so I hope she meant she ate some of Lewis' shaved ice and not the yellow snow in the yard during the winter.

Nice picture Lewis...

Haley

Haley is officially a Kindergartner! She graduated from preschool this week. She is so big, so smart and so beautiful! We love you Haley. Congratulations!

Haley's Preschool Graduation

West Bench

Last Saturday night we went to Herriman to listen to a band play. Adam has a friend from school, Jakson, whose dad plays drums in a band. They were doing a backyard concert for their friends so I took Adam, Haley, and Abigail. They have a trampoline, swing set with sand pit, and handball/basketball court in their backyard. They also rented a bounce house for the kids to jump in. So it really was a family event. The girls had a great time. They made friends and played for several hours. Adam already had a built in friend there so he has a great time too. I only knew the hosts at first but then as people arrived a friend of mine from school came so I talked with her and her husband for a while.
The music was great. They are called West Bench. They play jazz, funk, and fusion. As the evening got going they had a few more people join them to play. I was very impressed. They play every Thursday night at Beans & Brews in Riverton at 3956 Innovation Drive (Bangerter and 13400 South) at 7:00 pm. You can also look at their website at www.rodjost.com . They do events and Barbecue's. Very fun. Oh, now I sound like a commercial.

Abigail

Here she is. The beauty queen with the tissue in her nose. She had yet another bloody nose. She has one at least everyday. I know it is because of the dryness. Her skin is like sandpaper, her face has a dry red chapped look and feel to it. I put the lotion on and I let her play in the shower so she gets nice and steamy, but still the skin is raw and the nose bleeds. She is usually a trooper about it and if you look closely in the picture you can see she is smiling behind the tissue. Poor girl!

Aquarium

We bought a membership to the Aquarium Preview in Sandy last August. It was totally worth the money. If you go twice then it is paid for. We have gone about 8 times and I have taken the girls while the boys were in school a few more times. We went last week with my friend Mary Ruth and her kids Cash and Sage. They were picture crazy so there were tons of pictures. I choose about half and have them below. Jason and Cash were not feeling a need to be in the pictures most of the time so there are not very many of them.

SNAC

This past week I went to the School Nutrition Association Convention of Utah at the South Towne Expo Center. The conference was great overall. I learned a lot in the pull out sessions, the teachers were good and the main speakers were fabulous. There was just one thing wrong. The same thing that I find wrong at all of these conferences that I go to for School Nutrition. It was the FOOD! The first day there was no meals. There was a small food show, where distributors show their "school approved" food, with tastes so that we will want to buy. Well, 1.that kind of food does not translate very well to adults, and 2. samples are usually hot when they supposed to be cold, and cold when they are supposed to be hot. The information is very helpful and we get lots of good ideas for next year, but we do not get a good meal out of it. Then we had a "free" night, so that means no dinner. Then on the second day there was breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast was um...questionable. Onions and peppers were all through it. And there was fruit but not enough for everyone...hmmm.... Then lunch was this:

With this in it...

So it does not even look appetizing at all!!! And the little mushroom on the bottom, eww. Do you know me? Do you know how gross this would be for me to see on my plate? Not good. This and cake. Really? I was so hungry by 3 pm. And dinner was just as bad. No mushrooms but nothing that I could eat.

So after telling a friend about it, he asked if there were any snacks there. I said no and he said, "No SNACKS at the SNAC? That seems strange." Get it?

Jason Likes Shopping.... and Candy Corn

Here is Jason. He is a sweet, kind boy who will do almost anything to keep mom happy. He will even go grocery shopping with me. He is good at the store so I always like it when he comes. He doesn't run around and get in people's way. He stays by the cart and gets what I need him to get. He knows when he comes that if he is good then he will get to choose one treat. This time he chose candy corn.

Candy corn is funny in itself. Who eats candy corn when it is not Halloween and Thanksgiving time? Well here they sell it year round at Harmons.

Reasons that I love my Dad...

I did not do this last week so I thought that I would catch up now. Some of the reasons that I love my dad are:

*he has supported me through everything my whole life
*he is fun
*he is cute
*he was the "cool" dad
*he let me make my own mistakes
*he let me drive his car
*he showed me the world
*he gave me an appreciation for good food (even though I still like some of the gross stuff)
*growing up he could be livid with one of my siblings and when talking to me he could change his voice into a loving tone and smile
*he let me be the leader
*he indulged me (still does) with all of my crazy plans
*he paid my rent when I couldn't
*we "get" each other in a way that other don't "get" us
*he supported me and stood up for me even when I was pregnant with Adam
*he makes mistakes too
*he used to "children juggle"
*he believes in me
*he is a good man
*he taught us to support the military troops
*he came to my soccer games
*when I was a teenager he usually had a credit card for me to use
*he is very smart
*he really knows me
*he is honest
*when he sees something unjust going on he can't just sit by and watch it happen
*he used to take us camping
*he has always helped everyone even when he had nothing himself
*he let me slip into his classes at West Point with the cadets and answer questions
*he treats us all like equals

And mostly because:

*I know even when he is no longer with me he will still love me

I Love You Dad!

Kissing Facts

So I just read an article on MSN about kissing. Lewis and I have totally different takes on the article. Here is the short version of the article with my notes in red.

10 quirky facts about kissing By Laura Schaefer

1. Two out of every three couples turn their heads to the right when they kiss.
Seems reasonable. But I do not think that this one matters that much. (Lewis is laughing at me right now.)
2. A simple peck uses two muscles; a passionate kiss, on the other hand, uses all 34 muscles in your face. Now that’s a rigorous workout!
YEAH!! Let's get it on!
3. Like fingerprints or snowflakes, no two lip impressions are alike.
I knew this one from watching CSI.
4. Kissing is good for what ails you. Research shows that the act of smooching improves our skin, helps circulation, prevents tooth decay, and can even relieve headaches.
Kissing saves on medical bills. That is worth it with the cost of medical these days.
5. The average person spends 336 hours of his or her life kissing.
Lewis' comment was that I have already reached that so I do not need to do anymore. My answer to that was that I am not the average person. I am extraordinary.
6. Ever wonder how an “X” came to represent a kiss? Starting in the Middle Ages, people who could not read used an X as a signature. They would kiss this mark as a sign of sincerity. Eventually, the X came to represent the kiss itself.
Just an interesting bit of knowledge.
7. Talk about a rush! Kissing releases the same neurotransmitters in our brains as parachuting, bungee jumping, and running.
Kissing is like a high.
8. The average woman kisses 29 men before she gets married.
Um...gross, we aren't touching this one.
9. Men who kiss their partners before leaving for work average higher incomes than those who don’t.
Lewis says this is crap because men who kiss their partners before work are happy people who like their jobs. So kissing is because they are doing well, not that they are doing well because they kiss. Whatever. He is so full of it. (Love ya babe!)
10. The longest kiss in movie history was between Jane Wyman and Regis Tommey in the 1941 film, You’re in the Army Now. It lasted 3 minutes and 5 seconds. So if you’ve beaten that record, it’s time to celebrate!
Celebrate Good Times! Come On! It's a celebration!

Father's Day Afternoon

First of all it was not only Father's Day but it was also Alain's (dad) birthday.

We went to Cris' house for a BBQ on Sunday afternoon. It was my family, Cris' family, Sam and his kids, Angel, Rachel, and my parents. The menu was cheeseburgers, hot dogs, brats, pasta salad, chips, bean dip, fruit salad, deviled eggs, corn on cob and for dessert there was rhubarb crisp and ice cream sundaes. It was too much, but it always is and it is always great.

Angel says, I'm getting me some of this before it is gone!

While we were preparing food Lewis and Alain played Boules and Cris cooked at the grill. The kids ran around crazy while the soccer game was on TV. It was a normal Balmanno get together.

After we ate, we cleaned the table off and Alain, Donna, Sam, Lewis, Angel, Cris and I played Rummy. There were so many of us that we played elimination style. We got through Sam being eliminated and then started a second game. Meanwhile the "big" kids were in the basement watching Transformers. The little kids were upstairs watching The Little Mermaid. Marlo and Rachel were milling, washing dishes and talking. About 5 minutes into he second game Marlo and Rachel get dessert out and served Cris, Donna, Alain, and themselves. Little did they know (???) that 6 kids were lying in wait to get their dessert too. So we stopped the game and we served the kids. All 9 of them. For them to eat we had to abandoned the game and move to the front room.

The kids all sang Happy Birthday to Alain. It was funny to watch Donna direct the "choir".

Then they all took turns rapping a birthday greeting. Followed by Cris' rendition of "Happy Birthday Mr. President". Needless to say it was all very entertaining.

When it was time to go grandpa had all of the kids climb onto his lap for a hug. Then I needed a picture. It is a picture with ALL of the grand kids. As always I took a nice on and a crazy one.

*I find that when the kids know they will get to take a crazy picture they are more willing to sit still and smile for a nice one first. My kids have really embraced this. They know I have the expectation of them having at least 1 nice picture and then they can go crazy and do whatever they want in another one. When you have to get a picture with multiple kids it usually does not work in one try. Try this. It works for me!

Father's Day: Day

Each of the kids got Lewis a special gift. Adam got him a World's Best Dad mug that he made when he was still in school.

Jason got him a minty Utah Truffle Bar.
Haley made him a "toolbox" with gift certificates for different things.
Abigail drew a picture of the jungle.
Can you tell Lewis was still sleepy in these pictures? His eyes are still half shut, and we let him sleep until 10:00 am. After Lewis got his gifts we took him to Sweet Tomatoes for breakfast. They have been doing breakfast there for a while and we finally got a chance to try it. Everyone was very happy with the food. I was happy with the prices. Abigail and Haley were $2.49 including the drink. Jason was $3.49, and Adam was $4.99. Lewis and I were $7.00. That is cheaper then going to McDonald's or Wendy's with them. Adam always gets an adult meal now, and Jason gets one about half of the time. When did they grow up?

After breakfast we went home and Lewis played games for a while before we went to my brother's house for a Father's Day barbecue. But that is another post!

Jason got his cut too!

He is so darn cute!

Adam's Hair

Adam FINALLY got his hair cut. He wants Mitchell to see his hair. Mitchell get your hair cut like this:

He likes to have it styled into a Foe-Hawk.

This is so much better then the long "skater" style he was trying to rock.

Grams' Retirement

We went out to Magna on Saturday for Lewis' grandma's retirement party. It was at his uncle's house. Mark and Jill has a nice set up for Grams. We had lunch and cake with ice cream. The kids were on their best behavior the whole time. Which was a great surprise. Even with the 45 minute drive out there, they all did well.

Smiles!

Crazies!

Lewis, Grams, and Jason

Friday the 13th

On Friday the 13Th I took Marlo and 5 kids to The Mayan. It was VERY disappointing. The kids LOVED the show, and the food. I was very disappointed in the food. My pulled pork had mostly fatty tissue and not much meat. The bread was too much and the fries were mediocre. So when we left I decided to take the kids to the pool. We had Jakson with us too. We went to the Draper pool. The kids had a blast. Here are a few pictures of Adam and Jakson playing on the diving board.

School BBQ

I thought I better back track just a little bit to thank someone now that school is out. We had a fabulous BBQ last Thursday at school. It was field day and we were so excited to have a BBQ brought to the school and for the kids to have a fun day. Well the weather did not cooperate. It was cold, windy and rainy until about noon. Well lunch starts at 10:30 am so needless to say we had to switch plans quickly. Luckily for us Roseanne's husband decided rain or shine he would do the BBQ for us. He stood outside and cooked over 500 hamburgers for the kids, teachers, volunteers and families. To spite the weather the day went great! Thanks to everyone who helped out. Especially this guy:

Notice the tree blowing in the background. It was raining when I was taking this picture as well.
